The Straßberg Castle Ruins
A silent sentinel
Perched high above the village of Gossensass the striking ruins of Strassberg Castle stand as a place of history, mystery, and breathtaking views. Once a vital strategic post controlling the Brenner route, the castle now silently tells of centuries of change, conflict, and resilience.
Built in the 13th century, likely between 1263 and 1280 by ministeriales of the Counts of Tyrol, the castle was first mentioned in 1280 as Strazperch. It quickly became a regional power center – not only overseeing the busy Brenner trade route, but also serving as a customs post and court at times.
Its strategic importance, however, made it a target: during the Swabian War of 1499, it suffered major damage. Over time, it lost its function, fell into disrepair, and in the early 20th century was partially tunneled through by Fascist forces as part of the so-called Alpine Wall, a defensive line against Germany.
Today, the ruins present a romantic, timeworn scene: the mighty keep, sections of the outer wall, and the gate tower still stand, offering a fascinating glimpse into medieval architecture. Its location is particularly striking – set on a rocky outcrop with unobstructed views of the valley and surrounding peaks, a testament to its strategic siting.
A scenic hiking trail leads from the village center of Gossensass to the castle in about an hour. The path winds through forest and past old mills – a family-friendly excursion especially beautiful in the early morning or at golden hour. More ambitious hikers can extend the route through the hamlet of Ried or even continue toward Sterzing.
But Strassberg is more than stones and scenery – it’s steeped in legend. Locals speak of hidden treasure, ghostly lights, and mysterious figures wandering the ruins by night – a touch of mystique that lingers with every visit.
Now privately owned, the ruins can still be admired respectfully from the outside – with care for the natural surroundings, the history, and the property. Those who make the climb are rewarded with peace, sweeping views, and a sense of stepping into the past.
